The story I’m about to tell is one of a people who arose out of obscurity to create an empire which challenged, and often defeated the Byzantines, created an educational revolution from utter obscurity, embraced forms of radical politics unheard of in most of Europe, managed to play Hitler like a pawn in the Second World War and so much more.
